Some VOCABULARY

VOCABULARY TRICKS
1. ABSURD- illogical or untrue, laughably foolish or false
Trick – relate it to ‘surds’, that illogical topic in maths
Example- His statement was absurd and no one could understand it.
Synonyms- goofy, illogical, wacky, loony
Antonyms – certain, logical
2. Accommodate- fit in with the wishes and needs of
Trick – come to live with me till any date!
Example – To accommodate this trend, unions are leaving room in collective agreements for company-level pacts.
Synonyms – shelter, welcome, take in, entertain

Antonym- unaccommodating, homeless
3. Accomplice- a person who helps another commit a crime.
Trick- saves you from ‘police’!
Example- He was accused, though proof is lacking, of having been an accomplice in the massacres in the prison of the Abbaye.
Synonyms- aide, ally, conspirator, partner
Antonyms- adversary, foe
4. Acquit- free (someone) from a criminal charge by a verdict of not guily.
Trick – charges against you ‘Quit’
Example- We cannot wholly acquit the Italians of their share of blame.
Synonyms- release, liberate, vindicate, relieve
Antonyms- indict, incriminate
5. Acute – shrewd
Trick- feelings when an extremely ‘cute’ girl leaves you with
Synonyms- intense, piercing, astute, keen
Antonyms- dull, dreary
6. Adhere- stick fast to (a surface or substance)
Trick – added here: simply sticks to its place
Synonyms- follow, obey, comply, heed
Antonyms- disobey, unfasten
7. Adulterate- not pure, genuine
Trick – adult rated movie: innocence corrupted!
Synonyms- contaminate, taint, debase, degrade
Antonyms- cleansed, uncontaminated
8. Agitate- disturb
Trick- agitate till it is irritated!
Synonyms- beat, churn, concuss, convulse
Antonyms- calm, lull
9. Acclaim- praise enthusiastically and publicly
Trick- lay claim to praise
Synonyms- commendation, approbation, honor, exaltation
Antonyms- denunciation, censure
10. Acclimate- respond physiologically to a change
Trick- act according to the climate
Synonyms- accustom, conform, habituate, accommodate
Antonyms- unalterable, immutable
11. Accord – an official agreement or treaty
Trick- joined by a mutual respect ‘Cord’
Synonyms- deal, pact, concord, treaty
Antonyms- discord, contention
12. Accrue- accumulate or receive over time
Trick- Collect your own ‘crue’!
Synonyms- accumulate, gather, build up, collect
Antonyms- diminution, abatement
13. Addle – unable to think clearly
Trick- A dull brain that constantly paddles in doubt!

14. Adept – very skilled or proficient at something
Trick- at a certain depth: can handle anything
Synonyms- skillful, proficient, adroit
Antonyms- clumsy, inept
15. Adjourn- put off or postpone
Trick- We go on JOURNEY some other TIME
Synonyms- defer, delay, postpone, put off
Antonyms- hasten, expedite
16. Adorn – make more beautiful or attractive
Trick- decorate with ornaments
Synonyms- beautify, decorate, embellish, deck
Antonyms- mar, disfigure
17. Adversary- one’s opponent in a contest
Trick- meet someone who is adverse to you
Synonyms- antagonist, opponent, challenge, foe
Antonyms- ally, accomplice
18. Affinity- a natural liking for someone or something
Trick- like to be in someone’s /something’s vicinity
Synonyms- kinship, attraction, like- mindedness, closeness
Antonyms- hostility, loathing
19. Affirm- sate emphatically or publicly
Trick- firm about something: your word is final!
Synonyms- confirm, avow, corroborate, swear
Antonyms- rebut, deny
20. Animosity- a feeling of ill will arousing active hostility
Trick- Having ‘animal-like’ feelings for your enemy
Synonyms- Acrimony, enmity, antipathy, bitterness
Antonyms- good-will, liking
21. Abscission- The act of cutting something
Trick- Use those ‘Scissors’ to cut it out!
Synonyms- resection, aciurgy, incision, enucleation
Antonyms- uncut, augment
22. Absolve- To pardon or remit
Trick- Problem ‘Solved’: Not guilty
Synonyms- acquit, discharge, exempt, pardon
Antonyms- accuse, incriminate
23. Abstemious- Eating and drinking in moderation
Trick- Bad habits ‘Absent’
Synonyms- restrained, austere, temperate, ascetic
Antonyms- gluttonous, edacious
24. Abstinence- Practice of refraining from something
Trick- Absence of desire
Synonyms- Chastity, self-control, forbearance, frugality
Antonyms- covetousness, intemperance
