English Vocabulary from "The Hindu News Paper" Topic 1 : "Gauntlet at Sukma" - 16th March 2017


Dear Readers,
                       we are started to post daily vocab form The hindu and other editorial. Right Now I am posting all vocab which can be easy or hard for person to person. 
                    

  • 1.       Gauntlet - a thick heavy glove that you wear to protect your hand and lower arm
  • 2.       Ambush - to suddenly attack someone after hiding and waiting for them
  • 3.       Writ - the authority to rule or make laws
  • 4.       Tempting - if something is tempting, you want to do or have
  • 5.       Desperate - very serious or bad
  • 6.       Fading - to become less famous or less important
  • 7.       Insurgent - someone who is fighting against the government in their own country
  • 8.       Wake-up call - if something that happens is a wake-up call, it should make you realize that you need to take action to change a situation
  • 9.       Beef up something - to make something stronger or more important
  • 10.   Heartland - the part of a country that is most important for a particular activity
  • 11.   Sustained - to suffer or experience, especially damage or loss
  • 12.   Injury - physical harm or damage to someone's body caused by an accident or an attack
  • 13.   Battalion - a military unit consisting of three or more companies
  • 14.   Mortar - a large gun with a short, wide barrel (= a part shaped like a tube) that fires bombs or other explosives very high into the air, or an explosive device shot from such a gun
  • 15.   Mounted – fixed
  • 16.   Extremist - someone who has beliefs that most people think are unreasonable and unacceptable
  • 17.   Unprecedented - never having happened or existed in the past
  • 18.   Precision - the qualities of being careful and accurate
  • 19.   Formidable - causing you to have fear or respect for something or someone because that thing or person is large, powerful, or difficult
  • 20.   Sway - control or influence
  • 21.   Stronghold - a place or area where a particular belief or activity is common
  • 22.   Convoy - a group of vehicles or ships that travel together, especially for protection
  • 23.   Toll - the total number of people who have been killed or hurt
  • 24.   Personnel - the people who work for a company or organization, or who are members of a military force
  • 25.   Patchy - happening or existing in some places but not in other places
  • 26.   Consistently - in a way that does not vary
  • 27.   Insurgency - an occasion when a group of people attempt to take control of their country by force
  • 28.   Undermine - to make something or someone become gradually less effective, confident, or successful
  • 29.   Flagging - becoming weaker, more tired, or less enthusiastic
  • 30.   Absence - a detailed plan for achieving success in situations such as war, politics, business, industry, or sport, or the skill of planning for such situations
  • 31.   Merely - used to emphasize that you mean exactly what you are saying and nothing more
  • 32.   Ideology - a set of beliefs or principles, especially one on which a political system, party, or organization is based
  • 33.   Well-oiled - working easily and effectively
  • 34.   Machinery - the structure and systems of an organization or process
  • 35.   Robust – strong
  • 36.   Welfare - help given, especially by the state or an organization, to people who need it, especially because they do not have enough money
  • 37.   Ultimately - after a process or activity has ended
  • 38.   Put something forward - to offer an idea, opinion, reason etc, especially so that people can discuss it and make a decision
  • 39.   Might - used to make a suggestion or suggest a possibility in a polite way
  • Exhibit - to show something publicly
