The Hindu Editorial Vocab - 23rd March 2017 - Topic 2- "Russian connection: not helping Trump's credibility"

Credibility - the fact that someone can be believed or trusted

Erode - to slowly reduce or destroy something

Hearing - an official meeting that is held to collect the
facts about an event or problem

Alleged - claimed to be true, even though this has not
been proved

Mischaracterise - to misrepresent what someone says or thinks

Revelation - the act of making something known that was secret
8.
Grilling - an occasion when someone is asked a lot of
questions for a long time

Withheld - to deliberately not give something to someone

Inauguration - the act of putting someone into an official
position with a ceremony
11.
Recused - to withdraw oneself from acting as a judge or
other official in a court case because of possible conflicts of interest

Probe - to try to discover information that other people
do not want you to know, by asking questions carefully and not directly
13.
Alleged - to say that someone has done something illegal
or wrong without giving proof
14.
Meddling - to become involved in a situation that you have
no right to be involved in, in a way that is annoying

Came to light - if facts come to light, they become known
publicly

Scramble - to put things such as words or letters in the
wrong order so that they do not make sense

Ironically - in a way that is different or opposite from the
result you would expect

In the cross hairs - in a position to be criticized or attacked

Trove - a large supply of something such as art or
information

Vault - a room, especially in a bank, with thick walls
and a strong door, used to store money or valuable things in safe conditions

Wiretap - to secretly listen to people by connecting a
listening device to their telephone

Allegation - a statement, made without giving proof, that
someone has done something wrong or illegal

makes a situation impossible to accept

Debunk - to show that something is less important, less
good, or less true than it has been made to appear

Tendency - if someone has a tendency to do or like
something, they will probably do it or like it

Resort - the fact that you have to do something because
there is no other way of achieving something
29.
Unsubstantiated - an unsubstantiated argument, claim etc is one
for which you have no evidence
30.
Credibility - qualities that someone has that make people
believe or trust them
